It Is Finished

When Jesus said “It is finished” in John 19:30, what was he saying was finished?  Well, his first recorded words at the age of 12 in Luke 2:49, “And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father‘s business?”  But what was his Father’s business that He had now completed?  In John 18:37 Jesus testified “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”

But what is the truth about what Jesus finished on that cross?  Answer: He did away with the need for earthly priests because Jesus redeemed us once and for all!  Hebrews 10:11-12 means you don’t need to pray to a saint or confess to a priest for the Bible says “And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man [Jesus], after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;”

You see, we are born a child of wrath (Eph 2:3), a child of disobedience (Eph 2:2), a child of the devil (1 John 3:10).  I was born in sin (Psalm 51:5) as a son of Adam, the first sinner.  My great granddaddy Adam passed his sinful nature down to me through his corrupt seed (1 Peter 1:23).  I disobey God’s commandments because I can’t help it: I was born in bondage (Gal. 4:3).  But Hebrews 2:15 says that Christ delivered us “who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”  Hebrews 9:26 says that Christ “appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”  “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” - Hebrews 9:28.  The Bible says in 1 John 1:7 that “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

Which means it is the epitome of sinful pride to presume that I, by my own works or my own righteousness, could possibly save my sinful soul from God’s holy judgment in an eternal hell.  “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us” Titus 3:5.  “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:20.  “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” Galatians 2:16.  “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9.

What did Jesus finish on that cross?  He drank the cup of God’s wrath (John 18:11) that was meant for you and for me.  Do not be deceived: the great day of God’s wrath is coming soon.  “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7.

You’ve heard of Jesus?  You’ve heard He died on the cross?  You’ve probably even heard He died on the cross for your sins?  Why don’t you trust Jesus Christ right now.  Trust Jesus with all your heart.  Confess Him as Saviour.  Confess that He died to save you.  Confess you cannot save yourself.  Confess your sins have destined you to Hell.  Confess the blood of Jesus was shed on the cross to pay for your sins.  Confess you are trusting in Jesus Christ for eternal life.

John 1:12, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”

Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
